Taking good care of the mind means taking good care of the body. The foods we eat directly impact the functioning of all of our organs. This week is Kidney Health Week! Kidneys help the body process waste and excess fluids from the body in addition to creating hormones that regulate blood sugar, red blood cell production, and calcium in the body. Read this list of five foods that are beneficial for kidney health!

  1. Cruciferous Vegetables – Full of important nutrients like anitoxidants, vitamins, folate, fiber, and more, cruciferous vegetables have compounds that help the body process toxicity in the body. Try adding an extra serving of cabbage or cauliflower to your diet just for your kidney!
  1. Onions – A great vegetable used to bring flavor to many dishes, onions are packed with flavonoids, natural chemicals that prevent fat deposits within blood vessels. Additionally, onions contain quertecin, an antioxidant responsible for protecting against cancer and heart disease. The chromium found in onions helps the body metabolize fats, proteins, and carbs.
  1. 100% Cranberry Juice – Normal fruit juice is often full of sugars and preservatives. However, 100% cranberry juice is a great exception. Bitter in taste, cranberries are a super fruit for the kidney because of its powerful cleansing affect without the added sugars. Cranberries themselves are full of antioxidants, Vitamin C, and fiber, and they protect the body from developing ulcers and bacteria in the digestive track.
  1. Kale – Iron is extremely important for healthy kidney function, as many people with kidney disfunction are low in iron. Kale is full of iron! Kale also has many other nutritional benefits such as vitamin A and C to combat inflammation.
  1. Mushrooms – Another important mineral for the kidney is vitamin D, as it has been found to regulate kidney function and may help prevent kidney disease. Mushrooms are full of vitamin D. They are the best plant-based food source for vitamin D!
